Tips for Making Barley Tea

Tips for Making Barley Tea

While many types of barley tea are available in bottled form, making it at home is more economical if you drink it daily. Though it is easy to prepare, adding a personal touch based on taste preference and occasion can create a unique, homemade barley tea.

Difference Between Cold Brew and Boiled Barley Tea

Nutritionally, there is little difference between cold brew and boiled barley tea. However, the aromatic compound "alkyl pyrazine" is more activated in boiled tea, enhancing its richness. If you prefer a deeper flavor, boiling is recommended.

That said, cold brew tea lasts longer. When boiling, it is crucial to cool the tea quickly using ice water or running water to prevent bacterial growth. Regardless of the method, always store the tea in the refrigerator and consume it promptly.

Barley Tea with Sugar as a Sports Drink Alternative

For post-exercise hydration or when feeling fatigued, "sugar barley tea" is a great option. It replenishes lost minerals and provides energy. The recommended ratio is one tablespoon of sugar per liter of barley tea.

Barley Tea with Salt for Heatstroke Prevention

During extreme heat, drinking water alone may not be enough, as salt levels can drop. Adding 1–2g of salt per liter of barley tea creates "salt barley tea," which helps with hydration. If the saltiness is too strong, adding a bit of sugar can balance the taste.

While excessive intake of salt and sugar should be avoided, this drink is recommended for those engaging in outdoor activities under the hot sun. The combination of barley tea and salt is even endorsed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as a heatstroke prevention measure.

A Long-Established Tea House Since 1895

A Long-Established Tea House Since 1895

Yagisho is a long-established tea house specializing in genmaicha, founded in 1895 and based in Fujieda City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Originally, the business focused on making grain-based sweets for shrine offerings and processing grain flour. However, when a neighboring tea merchant suggested trying genmaicha production, Yagisho began manufacturing genmaicha and other teas.

The tea merchant who made the suggestion once walked through Gojo, Kyoto, and was drawn by a wonderful aroma. Upon following the scent, they discovered a tea shop that roasted rice with soy sauce on an iron plate and mixed it with tea, serving it to passersby. Finding this fascinating, the merchant thought, "If it's about rice and tea, Yagisho, with its expertise in grains, would be the right choice," and shared the idea with them.

While the production methods of genmaicha have evolved over time, Yagisho’s passion and dedication to grains remain unchanged.
